Replicating old sailing ships is not new. Think of Tim Severin sailing his replica Welsh Leather hulled boat across the Atlantic and later on his Arab Dhow from the Gulf to China. Then we have the Greek city of Volos building a replica of Jason and the Argonauts ship and sailing this in the Western Mediterranean. Australia has featured highly in this genre with the replica of Cooks ship the Endeavour.

The region of Normandy has such a themed venture underway. They are building a working replica of William the Conqueror’s flagship.

The resolution was approved in the council’s last session of 2023 and also includes the banning of the use of loudspeakers by guides, which the city claims can cause confusion and disturbances.

Elisabetta Pesce, the city’s security councillor, said that these measures aim to enhance the movement of groups, promoting sustainable tourism and ensuring the safety of the city, The City of Venice reported.

The changes form “part of a broader framework of interventions aimed at improving and better managing tourism in Venice, thus guaranteeing a greater balance between the needs of those who live in the city, either as residents or as workers, and those who come to visit the city,” Simone Venturini, the Tourism councillor said.

“The number of 25 people was also decided to give homogeneity to what already happens for visits to the city’s civic museums,” Venturini added.

The adjustments, part of the Police and urban security regulation modification, come after discussions with various stakeholders. The new article introduces precise rules for group visits, emphasising the fragility of Venice, traffic management, and coexistence with locals. Notably, the changes signal a crackdown on unauthorised tourist guides, no longer tolerated under the revised regulations.

Sebastiano Costalonga, the councillor for Commerce, underscores the importance of regulating tourist groups to certify accompanying guides. These initiatives collectively aim to give Venice a breather, combat over-tourism, and protect its UNESCO-listed heritage. As part of this strategy, the city plans to introduce a €5 day-tripper fee on peak days between April and mid-July, encouraging longer visits and improving residents’ quality of life.

This multi-pronged approach reflects Venice’s commitment to sustainable tourism, a crucial step to preserve the city’s unique charm and delicate ecosystem.

With Qantas advertising a lot to remind people to reclaim their credits and a points bonus associated with this, scammers have obviously observed this and are trying to cash in!

Investigating 209 Scamwatch reports received in the past four months, the National Anti-Scam Centre says the scam involves text messages targeting Qantas Frequent Flyer, Telstra and Coles loyalty programs’ customers.

“While the vast majority of reports to Scamwatch received so far are in relation to Qantas Frequent Flyer, Telstra and Coles loyalty programs, it is important for Australians to be aware that any loyalty program could be referred to in this type of scam,” ACCC Deputy Chair Catriona Lowe said.

According to the ACCC, consumers receive a text message or email telling them their loyalty points are expiring. A link to a fake website is provided.

The message then prompts customers to log in. From here, they may ask customers to provide credit card details to use loyalty points.

If successful, scammers steal customers’ points, login details and personal information to use on other platforms for identity theft.

The ACCC urges customers of these programs to ignore any clicks in the text messages. They also suggest people independently check the status of their points on the appropriate app or website.

“The National Anti-Scam Centre has contacted the companies that have been impersonated by scammers and is working with web host providers to have the fake websites taken down, to minimise harm to the community,” Lowe said.

“We are very concerned that Australians experiencing cost-of-living pressures may be more susceptible to these scams.

“Scammers are deliberately panicking consumers by claiming their points are expiring soon.

“We urge people to immediately delete or ignore any message regarding a loyalty program that contains a link.”

The following advice to; STOP: THINK: PROTECT: is sound advice! Too many people react to a message too quickly!

To avoid scams generally, the ACCC recommends consumers (STOP) take their time before providing any personal information. They should (THINK) ask themselves if the messages could be fake, and (PROTECT) act quickly if something feels wrong. Customers should also consider contacting the company named in the message and report scams to Scamwatch.

According to The Guardian, Choice CEO Alan Kirkland said consumers “shouldn’t have to bear the entire cost of scam losses”.

“Banks should be required to compensate customers when they fail to take reasonable steps to stop money being stolen through a scam,” he said.

“A mandatory code that requires banks to reimburse their customers for scam losses would significantly reduce distress for customers affected by scams, and create the right incentives for banks to invest in scam prevention.”

ACCC figures show Aussies lost a record $3.1 billion to scams in 2022, which is more than 50 per cent higher than the $2 billion lost in 2021.

EDITOR Notes: The UK has recently introduced laws whereby the customers bank and the receiving bank are 50/50 liable for the loss to the customer. That should provoke some actions being taken by the banks! This is also an oportune time to remind people to ensure they have a quality VPN App on their device when travelling, not a free one a paid for version!!

VISITFLANDERS and its regional partners will launch an 18-month series of new exhibitions and experiences that invite travellers to uncover how the ‘Landscapes’ of Flanders Fields are the last witness to the First World War. Over 100 years ago, the fighting on the Western Front forever transformed the landscapes of Flanders – kilometres of trenches and dugouts, hundreds of cemeteries, monuments and other silent witnesses appearing among picturesque villages, fields and quiet roads.

Today, these marks remain, and are being brought into the spotlight by ‘Landscapes’ a program from VISITFLANDERS and its regional partners which includes the opening of new permanent experiential memorials, sound and light events, augmented reality experiences, specifically curated exhibitions and more. Highlights include:

New ‘Peace Bridge’ to open in Ypres (opens 29 April 2023, permanent memorial) – the fortifications of Ypres will see a new small and tranquil bridge open, a harmonious memorial combining art and architecture, inviting visitors to reflect. Constructed in weathering steel, the guard rail is embellished with the word ‘peace’ in 86 languages.

Augmented Reality Experience at Hooglede ‘One Last Greeting’ (end April 2023 to end 2024) – visitors can use an app to scan QR codes, causing German Nurse Ida to appear to guide them around the German Military Cemetery, bringing to life what she experienced treating the wounded and as a last confident of soldiers before they died.

Vleteren Walk time-travel viewing boxes (29 April 2023 to 31 August 2024) – reintroducing elements of WWI into the current landscape, visitors can look through viewing boxes to peep back in time to discover what would have been visible at those exact spots during wartime. Images include a vanished tram stop, the village square back then and the flooded Yser. The accessible walking route uses paved roads and paths.

Hooge Crater Museum, ‘The Front Eye’ (end April 2023 to end 2024) – at the heritage Hooge chapel, a brand new platform allows you to look out over Hill 60, Hill 62, Sanctuary Wood Cemetery, Hooge Crater Cemetery, Kemmelberg and Ypres Salient. Here, the minimal height differences determined how the Great War progressed, through this new ‘Front Eye’, you can see this for the first time. Also on display, a valuable collection of weapons, uniforms and equipment from the four different armies that took place in WWI, among the most striking items – a life-sized tableaux showing what daily life during the war was like. On-site there is a themed café in a former local schoolhouse where you can view decorated shell casings (shell-art).

CWGC Ieper Information Centre “Witnesses in the Landscape” exhibition (29 April 2023 to 31 August 2024) – no two Commonwealth War Graves Cemeteries are the same, an immersive drawing and experience installation relates stories and bite-sized facts about over 20 of these cemeteries, a mix of well-known and hidden sites.

In Flanders Fields Museum new ‘For Evermore: Cemeteries of the First World War’ exhibition (29 April 2023 – 18 Feb 2024), reveals personal stories, unique objects, interactive and multimedia installations. Audio guides, the ‘For Evermore’ podcast and an adapted children’s trail (designed for ages 10+) make this history accessible to all generations.

Talbot House ‘The Talbotousians in War & Peace’ exhibition (30 April 2023 to summer 2024) – during WWI, Talbot House in Poperinge welcomed over half a million Talbotousians – Commonwealth soldiers from throughout the ranks. This new exhibition tells the story of Talbot House founder, Tubby Clayton, bringing to life tales of Talbot House during the war and after – when Tubby and his pilgrims spent many years visiting the graves of deceased comrades. Together, they also founded the global organisation Toc H to support veterans and their families.

Yser Tower ‘Traces in the Landscape’ (3 May 2023 to Autumn 2024) – high up in the panoramic room of Yser Tower, you can relive the construction of the first tower and the deliberate flooding of Yser during WWI.

The Yellow Ribbon Trail (14 May 2023 to 31 August 2024) – hundreds of yellow ribbons connect ten sites in and around Koekelare, from the German Military Cemetery in Vladslo with ‘The Grieving Parents’ sculpture to the Lange Lax Museum. Inspired by the song ‘Tie A Yellow Ribbon Round The Old Oak Tree’ by Dawn, this walking, cycling or driving trail is a symbol of hope for return and of lost loved ones.

Poperinge Visitor Centre ‘Forgotten Tracks’ immersive experience (from 30 June 2024) – housed in an underground annex alongside the visitor centre at

Lijssenthoek Military Cemetery, floor, wall and ceiling projections coupled with surround sound and lights will transport visitors to a train station during wartime: trains arrive and depart, soldiers march towards the front lines, wounded are taken away and bombs fall in the night…

Flanders Fields outdoor Art Trail ‘Invisible Landscape’ (end June 2023 to end Summer 2024) – impressive art installations bring faded battlefield sites back to life. The land art trail marks places where the fallen were buried, wounded were cared for, tram tracks ran carrying supplies to the soldiers and more. Two trails to choose from, ideal for cycling or walking.

There are many other things to see enjoy drink and eat, in and around the Flanders region.

France’s Commission d’enrichissement de la langue française* has decided to offer citizens new ways to describe video games in the language of the land.

The Commission’s mission is to create new terms that replace adopted words from foreign languages that become part of common speech in France, so that French doesn’t have gaps in vocabulary.

On Sunday, the French ministry of culture therefore issued new guidance [PDF] about how to discuss video games in French.

French speakers have been encouraged to ditch terms such as “cloud gaming” in favor of “jeu vidéo en nuage”

Retro gaming becomes “rétrojeu video”, or just “rétrojeu”.

French gamers who download additional content for their preferred entertainment will henceforth be acquiring “contenu téléchargeable additionnel”. If that content includes in-game ads, French gamers will be viewing “publicité intrajeu”.

E-sports professionals make their livings as “joueur/joueuse professionnel/professionnelle” and compete in “jeu vidéo de competition”.

The translated terms were published in the Journal Officiel de la République – the equivalent of the government Gazette in other nations. The Journal Officiel shares such Gazettes’ function as the definitive record of government decisions and actions. The Register understands the Journal Officiel is also binding on French government employees, meaning all are required to speak only of “squelettage” instead of the animation technique known as “rigging”.

Want to pick up a new language? These ones apparently offer you your best shot at fluency…

Learning a foreign language is never easy (and don’t let the linguistically talented Dutch, Swiss or Belgians fool you into thinking they are not – they spend years and sometimes decades mastering their several lingos). But some foreign languages are obviously less difficult than others.

After calculating the average time it takes to learn the world’s top 20 languages, as well as polling 6,250 students on why they quit learning a language, UK training company TheKnowledgeAcademy revealed that Dutch could well be the easiest foreign tongue to master.

Editors note: In a past working life in the Netherlands this editor found Dutch easy to ‘pick up’. His background in basic German assisted.

According to TheKnowledgeAcademy’s findings, learners of the Dutch language continue with their studies longer than any other pupils, with those dropping out still completing 89.7% (or 26 out of 29) of lessons. Spanish was also deemed one of the easier languages to learn, with a completion rate of 86.2% among the non-finishers polled.

Other language learners least likely to give up early include Portuguese (82.8% completion), Romanian (79.3%) and Italian (75.9%). So which language learners give up the quickest? According to this study, learners of Arabic are most likely to quit before anyone else, with students likely to give up an average 42.3% (in 20th place) of the way through their course.

Behind Arabic, Vietnamese (50% completion), Hindi (51.9%), and Russian (53.8%) were the next quickest lingos to be deserted. Despite being the world’s most commonly accepted lingua franca, English finished 15th out of 20 (59.6%) in terms of completion.

When asked why they quit, four in ten (42%) students said they lacked motivation, three in ten (31%) claimed their language was too hard, 15% blamed a lack of resources, and 8% said they gave up because of their inability to reach the next level of fluency.

Teachers totally rock

Teaching professionals are absolute legends, which is why teachers from over 75 countries in which Qatar Airways currently operates are eligible for tickets.

To ensure the application process is fair and transparent, each country will receive a daily allocation of tickets, staggered over the three-day campaign period.

The daily allocation will be released at 04:00 AM Doha time throughout the campaign period.

Teachers that successfully register will receive one Economy Class return ticket to anywhere on Qatar Airways’ current network of more than 90 destinations worldwide. Additionally, they will receive a voucher for 50 per cent off one future return ticket that they can use for themselves, a family member or a friend. Both tickets are valid for travel up to 30 September 2021.

“We at Qatar Airways are incredibly grateful for the commitment and hard work of teaching professionals around the world who continue to educate our young people in these times of uncertainty. We know that it has not been an easy task, yet teachers have been incredibly resourceful, turning to online learning and other methods.”

His Excellency Mr. Akbar Al Baker, Qatar Airways Group Chief Executive

“As the largest airline flying consistently throughout the pandemic, we have also supported students in recent weeks by flying to wherever they need to be to start their studies on charter as well as scheduled flights. As an airline, we firmly believe in the importance of education and are committed to lending our support to educational causes,” said His Excellency Mr. Akbar Al Baker.

Qatar supporting education

Since 2013, Qatar Airways has been a proud supporter of Education Above All’s Educate A Child programme, which was launched in 2012 by Her Highness Sheikha Moza bint Nasser to significantly reduce the number of children worldwide who are denied their right to education.

Qatar Airways’ passengers are invited to donate to Educate A Child on board and at qatarairways.com upon reaching the payment page during the online flight booking process.

Each year, Qatar Airways matches the total number of on board passenger donations. The airline also displays the foundation’s video commercial on its Oryx One inflight entertainment to raise awareness and encourage donations.
